-Acitrezza
a fishing
village 7 km from Catania the setting of Giovanni Verga's great novel I
Malavoglia and Luchino Visconti's black-and-wite film "The Earth
Trembles" .Today Acitrezza is also a summer seaside resort. It is
famous for its "needles" huge black masses of lava from
Etna, which according to myth were hurled by Polyphemus at the fleeing
Ulysses' ship or, according to another version, at the lovers Acis and
Galatea.

The town developed around the castle that was built by the Normans
in 1076. The castle later became the domain of Ruggero di Laurìa
and it was taken by Frederick II of Aragon in 1397 . Wich
originally was connected ti the mainland by a drawx bridge, is
built in lava stone, and it still has the massive aspect of a
fortified stronghold, rising sheer above the sea. It contains the
civic museum, which covers mineralogy, palaentology, and
archeology.
